The Retrofit Boom: Upgrade Existing Glass to Smart Glass Without Replacing It

Replacing glass is no longer the only route to switchable privacy. Self-adhesive PDLC film turns existing windows, doors and partitions smart in a single day.

Across the industry, order volumes for retrofit smart film have been climbing sharply - recent trade reporting cites year-on-year growth above 50% for construction-side smart film orders. The reason is simple: most buildings already have perfectly good glass. Replacing doors, partitions and windows just to add privacy is expensive, slow and wasteful.

What self-adhesive PDLC film actually is

Self-adhesive PDLC film is a 0.4 mm laminate: two PET layers, two ITO conductive coatings and the liquid-crystal core, plus a factory-applied adhesive with a protective liner. Applied to existing glass it switches between clear and frosted in under 10 milliseconds, blocks 99% UV and 98% IR, and is powered at safe AC 60V. When the power is off the film is frosted - privacy is the default state.

Where retrofits make the most sense

  • Offices between leases - glass partitions become switchable meeting rooms without dismantling anything
  • Hotel renovations - bathroom and suite glazing upgraded room by room while floors stay open
  • Clinics and dental practices - privacy without curtains that harbor bacteria; the glass surface disinfects like ordinary glass
  • Homes - bathroom windows, bedroom doors and street-facing panes, with no blinds to clean

The three rules for a clean retrofit

Factory guidance has not changed in a decade, and every failed DIY job we see breaks one of these three rules:

  1. Dry install only. Never soapy water - only 99% isopropyl alcohol as a light spray aid. The adhesive bonds on contact and re-lifting weakens it.
  2. Order exact sizes. The film should be cut 2-3 mm smaller than the glass area. Factory tolerance is ±2 mm; cutting on site damages the busbar edge and voids the warranty.
  3. Neutral silicone only. Acid-cure silicone corrodes the film edges. Use certified neutral (acid-free) sealant such as Toshiba 381 or Dow Corning 799.

What it costs compared to glass replacement

Per square meter, self-adhesive film typically lands well below the cost of demolishing and re-glazing with new laminated smart glass - and the work is measured in hours, not days. Full pricing depends on grade, size and quantity; send us your pane dimensions for an itemized quote including the correctly sized transformer, or order a free sample to test the film on your own glass first.
